My Approach

Animals can’t talk to us with words, yet they will always tell us when something isn’t right. It’s our duty as good owners and trainers to be aware of their language and fix the problems. When there isn’t a clear pathway of communication things breakdown and behaviour problems can occur.

Having the correct advice and approach is crucial for success when treating behaviour problems to ensure they don't escalate or are expressed in a different way.

I only promote the use of ethical, evidence-based methods of practice in animal behaviour modification and training that are safe, humane and effective.

Bridle and bit fitting

Finding the right bit is not always a quick job. Unfortunately there is no such thing as a ‘magic bit’ that resolves every issue for every horse. Each horse is different in their conformation, behaviour, personality and way of going under saddle.

These all need to be taken into account and worked with to find that perfect bit that suits your horse, your riding level and discipline. A bit that doesn’t fit properly or causes discomfort will only weaken your communication and subsequently affect your horse’s welfare. The bit is just as important as having a well fitted saddle; you wouldn’t expect your horse to perform well if the saddle is causing it pain! Yet often the importance of the bit gets overlooked, or the wrong design is chosen and the horse is expected to carry on. Having a bit that your horse is comfortable with allows them to listen to your cues as a rider and together your riding relationship will flourish.

Animal Behaviour consultations

These sessions are for owners experiencing difficult or severe behavioural problems with their pets, such as aggression or separation anxiety. Sometimes you may be unsure what the problem is or maybe there are several behaviours that are getting worse and you are not sure what the cause is. If a behaviour is becoming dangerous, affecting your daily life or you are struggling to cope, contact me to discuss any problems you’re having and together we’ll work on a solution.

I often work closely with vets and other professionals to find the right solution for an animal and sometimes I will ask that your animal has a full check up by your vet to ensure there is no underlying medical cause for the behaviour.

Training Sessions

1:1 or group sessions focusing on training particular behaviours or working on improving general behaviour work and furthering skills. These can be tailored for whatever you’d like to work on with your pet. Popular sessions include: recall, lead work, life skills, training for calm, groundwork, handling, stable manners and spookiness in the arena.
